Both commercial & non-commercial kitchen operators face a very important problem that to keep your grease trap well maintained. Grease Traps are small devices connected directly to the outgoing drains of sinks inside or outside the restaurant/home. Grease Traps are for holding small quantities of FOG, such traps must be cleaned frequently, such as daily or weekly. The frequency of cleaning will change depending on the type of food served in your home/business. If not properly cleaned and operated, clogging your sewage & can be raw sewage overflowing into your kitchen and bathroom areas creating an expensive and unpleasant cleanup. Each grease trap is different, so to know the right time for cleaning you should inspect regularly. Here we introduce an easy checklist for grease trap maintenance.
- Depends on the place where you live and the water authorities, your requirements must vary. So don't forget to refer to your local authorities for advice on the kind of grease trap you can use, where to place it, and maintenance.
- Do not connect a dishwasher to a grease trap in your kitchen. Because Hot water from the dishwasher will liquefy the grease and move it through the trap and into the sewer system, & it may clog the pipes.
- Proper discharge of food waste disposal unit. Do not discharge waste into any grease trap.
- Do not make any alterations or changes on your own that interfere with normal grease trap functions and operations.
- Grease traps must be properly cleaned and maintained periodically. Cleaning may be performed by you or by a licensed grease trap maintenance company.
- Using a licensed grease trap maintenance company is the most reliable and preferred option.
- Each Grease traps have specifications for cleaning according to its manufacturer’s recommended frequency. Clean according to it weekly, monthly, etc.
- It is good that cleaning is done by a licensed permitted grease trap maintenance company at a minimum of every 90 days.
- You are responsible to adequately maintain and repair your grease trap to assure the trap will operate as designated at all times. Try not to do the direct addition of any enzymes, chemicals, and bacteria treatment to a grease trap.
- Try to clean the trap when wastewater will not be passing through it. Do not leave any lumps in the grease trap as this may lead to clogging.
- Replace grease trap covers properly and clean the surrounding area with a disinfectant.
- The grease trap waste container sealed tightly and disposed of with other kitchen waste.
- Do not dispose of the grease trap waste to other areas like the toilet, gulleys, surface channels or manholes.
